MacBook case or sleeve: which one do you need (or both)?
“Should I buy a case or a sleeve for my MacBook?” is one of the questions we hear most. They sound like the same thing, but each one protects at a different moment: the case while you use the laptop, the sleeve while you carry it around. Here is when one is enough and when it pays to combine them.
What a case is and what it protects against
A hard case is two pieces that snap onto the lid and the base of the MacBook. It stays on all the time, even with the laptop open, and leaves the ports and vents free. Its job is everyday wear: scratches on the lid, rubbing against keys, marks from setting it down on the table and minor bumps, such as knocking it against the edge of a desk.
What it does not do is cushion like padding: it is thin by design, so it is not meant for drops from height or for travelling loose among books and chargers. It does not keep water out either.
In return, it gives your laptop a new look. We cover materials and styles in which MacBook case to choose.
What a sleeve is and what it protects against
A sleeve is a padded zip-up pouch that holds your MacBook when it is closed. It does its work as soon as the laptop leaves home: in your backpack, in your bag or under your arm. The padding absorbs knocks in transit, stops the charger or your keys from scratching the lid and, because the outer fabric of our sleeves is water-resistant, it copes with light rain and splashes. Just don't submerge it or leave it out in a long downpour.
Its limit: as soon as you open the laptop to work, the sleeve stays on the chair and the MacBook is exposed.
Case, sleeve or both: the table
| Case only | Sleeve only | Case + sleeve | |
|---|---|---|---|
| When it protects | Always, even with the laptop open | Only while carrying it | At all times |
| Against what | Scratches, scuffs and minor bumps from daily use | Knocks in a backpack or bag, rubbing against other items and light rain | All of the above |
| What it doesn't cover | Hard knocks while carrying it, and water | Scratches and marks while you use it | Drops from height with the laptop open |
| How to choose | By model number (Axxxx) | By measurements in centimetres | Case by model; sleeve by measurements with the case on |
| Weight and bulk | Minimal, the laptop stays slim | Only when you carry it | A little extra thickness inside the sleeve |
| Ideal if… | You mostly work at home or in the office | You carry it every day and like seeing the bare aluminium | You use it on the go and carry it in a backpack or bag |
When one is enough
A case is enough if…
Your MacBook lives on your desk and rarely goes out, or you carry it in a backpack with a padded laptop compartment. Transport is already covered, and what worries you is everyday scratching.
A sleeve is enough if…
You prefer the aluminium as it is and what worries you is the journey: you carry it in a bag or backpack without padding, or you cycle or take public transport. The laptop travels protected and on the desk you use it without any extra layers.
When it makes sense to combine them
If your laptop leaves home almost every day and you also use it in places where it can get scratched (library, café, classroom), the combination is the sensible choice: the case looks after the outside while you work, and the sleeve adds padding and water resistance on the way. One detail almost nobody thinks about: a case adds a few millimetres of thickness, width and depth, so the sleeve size should be chosen with the case on.
How to choose the size when you use both
The case is chosen by the model number printed on the bottom of the MacBook (Axxxx); the sleeve, by centimetres. We already have a laptop sleeve size guide with the inner measurements of each size, so here we only add what changes when you add a case:
- MacBook Neo 13" (A3404): with or without a case, it fits comfortably in the 33 cm sleeve.
- MacBook Air 13" M2 to M5 and MacBook Pro 14": choose the 35.5 cm one. With the case on, the 33 cm sleeve is too tight.
- MacBook Air 15": the 37.3 cm one, which leaves room even with a case.
- MacBook Pro 16": without a case it just fits in the 37.3 cm sleeve, with barely a millimetre to spare in width. With a case it does not fit in any of our sleeves; in that case, a backpack with a padded compartment is the better option.
If your laptop falls between two sizes, go for the larger one: a little room to spare does not reduce protection.
Heads-up: the new touchscreen MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR
The 14" or 16" MacBook Pro with a PROLED XDR touchscreen unveiled in October 2026 has a new chassis with different dimensions. That is why current cases do not fit it, ours included. We explain it in our article on the new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR and M6.
A sleeve, on the other hand, can work, because it is chosen by measurements. The 14" model measures 31.08 × 21.63 × 1.50 cm and fits easily in the 35.5 cm sleeve. The 16" model measures 35.55 × 24.42 × 1.60 cm and fits in the 37.3 cm sleeve, with little room to spare in width.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put my MacBook in the sleeve with the case on?
Yes, that is what most people do when they use both. Just choose the sleeve size for the laptop with the case on, which is a few millimetres larger. The exception is the 16" MacBook Pro, which does not fit in our sleeves with a case on.
Does a case protect against drops?
Against minor bumps, yes, but it is no substitute for the padding of a sleeve in a hard fall.
Does the sleeve protect against rain?
Our sleeves are water-resistant: they handle light rain and splashes. They should not be submerged or left out for long in heavy rain.
What can I use for the 2026 touchscreen MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR?
For now, a sleeve: the 35.5 cm one for the 14" model and the 37.3 cm one for the 16". Current cases do not fit because this MacBook Pro has a new chassis.
